Redesigning the placement process at National Institute of Design
The National Institute of Design organises Industry Interface annually to provide a meeting ground where the prospective employer and students can meet and employer can identify suitable candidates for recruitment in their organization. The existing process and the methodologies were thoroughly studied from the perspective of leadership and used as a benchmark. Gaps and opportunities were mapped that were further address via different design interventions.

Post the 5th and the final semester of the master's course.
To understand the existing process of placements/ Industry Interface at NID.
To measure and understandthe current process better placements at various other design colleges was studied in India and globally.
To map the stakeholders involved in this process, their aspirations, needs and key roles.

Mapping gaps, challenges
After the research, data collection and analysis, the gaps and opportunities were broadly divided into three key categories. They were further studied and mapped in detailed and connected to get a holistic understanding.
A method to enhance the collective experience through the placement process for the stakeholders (From pre-placement to post).
Develop a method to make the students realise their potential, skillset and the value they could add.
Define the role of the stakeholders well to curb uncertainty and ambiguity.
Solution 1- Align (Structure)
This solution looks at essentially de-centralizing and re-aligning the current placement team structure to a more collaborative, efficient and transparent one.
Solution 2- Define (Aptitude Web)
This solution aims at helping the students define their goals better via a matrix. This would help them understand and define their own capabilities, skills, and aspirations better. The more aware they would be the chances of them choosing the right career paths and companies would be higher. The recruiters will also benefit from hiring more informed and a better fit for the job candidates.
Aptitude Mapping would be conducted before the placements so that the students proceed forward and choose the companies that match their interests reducing the ambiguity, uncertainty, confusion, and anxiety at the selection stage.
Solution 3.1- Design (Guidelines)
These guidelines would help remove the ambiguity and the points of uncertainty making the process more well-defined and transparent for the stakeholders.
The guidelines were designed in two parts: 1. For the recruiters/ companies and 2. For the students applying.
Solution 3.2- Design (Interface)
The interface of the portal for the company and student registration was re-imagined and basic wireframes were chalked.
- Adding Alumni Network on the portal.
- All year the companies could post jobs/ internships/ events.
- All information will be posted on the portal.
- Reduce the pressure from Placement Week.
COMMON PORTAL for both all the stakeholders.
The most crucial learning of this project was to see leadership beyond just people. It made me look at a process, in this case, the placement of M.Des students at NID as a leader which leads its stakeholders towards efficiency. I learned how to adapt and design a process to imbibe strong and powerful qualities. It also exposed me to different explorations and research methods to different stakeholders and their concerns in a short time window. It also provided an insight as to how the process impacts an organization's structure, system, perception, and even behavior.
